Dr. Bob Long often talks about the saints on whose shoulders we stand. This is particularly true of St. Luke's United Methodist Church's food ministry. Ending Hunger OKC is a testament to those who came before to begin serving mobile meals more than 34 years ago.
On December 8, 1984, St. Luke's began delivering mobile meals on Saturdays to senior citizens in an area extending from Northwest 10th Street to Northwest 56th Street, and from Robinson Avenue west to Villa Avenue. Fritz and Marcia Hunzicker coordinated the program, while Nancy Kerr served as the food coordinator. At that time, mobile meals in the OKC area were overseen by Neighborhood Services Organization.
"St. Luke's views Mobile Meals or Meals on Wheels as one of its local mission projects where we put action to the Master's words to feed the hungry." (The Good News, July 24, 1985). St. Luke's was also among the first mobile meals programs to provide a compassionate response to people living with HIV when on August 27, 1988, Merle and Danny Daniels began coordinating meal deliveries to the affected community.
The cooks would arrive at 9 a.m. each Saturday to begin preparing the meals and packing them in ice chests to keep them warm. Volunteer drivers would arrive at 10:50 a.m. to load
the ice chests and begin their deliveries. In just over six months, St. Luke's had already delivered more than 1,200 meals.
